Area Map

The above graphic shows how traffic will be diverted from the northbound high speed lane in the I-495 Lowell Bridge Bundle work zone beginning on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

South of the Concord River Bridge, northbound traffic, represented above by the black arrows, will have the option to either continue in the two remaining northbound lanes, or cross the median on a temporary cross-over lane.  Traffic that uses the cross over will:
A concrete barrier will protect traffic traveling in opposite directions.

Drivers will be alerted to the upcoming shift through the use of signage and Variable Message Signs.  The lane shift, as shown above, will be in place for roughly seven months and has been designed to allow drivers to travel at the posted speed limit as well as for safe and effective snow and ice removal.  Large trucks will be prohibited from the cross overs and contra-flow lane except during specific construction operations that will divert all northbound traffic to the contra-flow lane.

By diverting traffic, the project team will be able to begin major bridge construction in the median and in the portion of the highway no longer available to traffic.  This represents a major milestone in delivering this project on time and on budget.
